Brogues are often known as wingtips in the USA, are a low heeled shoe made of heavy duty untanned leather. The term wingtip derives from the pattern on the toe, which forms a W and resembles the profile of a birds wings.
Brogues are traditional men's country shoes, less formal than brogued Oxford shoes, or shoes with less than full broguing. As an outdoor shoe, they are normally made in brown leather and are not traditionally worn in town.
Full brogues have a toe cap in a W shape, with patterns on various sections of the shoe, such as the heel. Half brogues have a normal straight edged toe and less punching. The term full brogue and half brogue do not typically refer to brogues in the traditional sense, but instead to the degree of brogue pattern on the shoe, allowing for example a full brogued shoed with closed lacing.
